As a long term on and off smoker, I found many unsuccessful ways to quit smoking. Ways that helped me stop yet never dealt with the main issues or the smoking blueprint that I had instilled in my mind over the years, hence my failure to remain a non smoker long term. An ex smoker used to smoke!

Well we know that you fool! Maybe you do know that. But every time you refer to yourself as an ex______ (and you can fill in the gap for any habit) you are reminding yourself that `yes you were a smoker!` When you think of an ex girl friend or boy friend what do you picture? Do you picture their face or their body? You might now I`ve mentioned it. No. You will picture the emotional times you had. 9 times out of 10 the old times always seem better than they where. This is called nostalgia by the way. It`s taking a memory, taking out all the negative memories and keeping all the good stuff. It`s the same with smoking. Being an ex-smoker is a label you put on yourself that gives you a link back to how smoking used to make you feel. Like a calling card. You don`t think of the smell or the control it had over you! You think about how it made you relax. We want to eliminate any positive link back to the fact that you used to smoke, so drop the `ex`!

Most smokers link their habit to a way of relieving stress. This is their vital link and a way to rationalise smoking again. "Oh boy I`ve had a bad day! I need a fag!" Does the cigarette make you feel better and take away all the problems of the day? No it doesn`t.
